Une conférence intitulée « Removing the 'Forever' in Forever-Chemicals ?

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a class of synthetic chemicals known for their persistence in the environment, earning them the name "Forever Chemicals". Certain PFASs have been shown to have adverse health effects, which, combined with their persistence, is of particular concern. The widespread use of PFASs in various industrial and consumer products has led to contamination of soil and groundwater, posing significant challenges for environmental remediation. This presentation will explore the multifaceted challenges associated with traditional remediation methods, and the development of innovative approaches for PFAS immobilization. Furthermore, insights into the environmental and health risks posed by PFAS, coupled with an exploration of challenging PFAS analysis, will provide a comprehensive understanding of the complex landscape surrounding PFAS contamination. The talk will delve into a compelling case study, the "Rastatt-case", where a large-scale PFAS contamination of over 1.000 ha requires extensive research on remediation techniques. We will examine the efficacy of various approaches to limit the mobility of PFAS in soil, thereby minimizing environmental and human exposure. Ultimately, this presentation seeks to foster a dialogue on the urgent need for effective PFAS remediation strategies and to encourage collaboration among researchers and environmental professionals. By sharing experiences and lessons learned from the Rastatt-case, we aim to contribute to the collective knowledge required to tackle the challenges associated with PFAS in soils and pave the way towards a more sustainable and resilient environment.
